Health and Care
Every bird owner needs a scale. You should weigh your bird every day. Ideally in the morning right after the morning poop for accurate results. Birds hide that they are sick. Often the only signs are weight loss. If your bird is loosing weight take it to the vet. The only way you are going to know is with a scale. If you already have digital letter or food scale you can use that, just make a little perch for your bird to stand on. If you don't have a scale get one of these!BUY NOW from Windy City Parrot Supply
If you have birds sooner or later you are going to get moths. Start by keeping all your bird food, nuts, treats, etc. in sealed airtight containers. When you do get moths use these traps. NEVER use sprays of any kind around birds! These traps are what we use and they do work.
2 safe traps per package.
The Birdseed Moth Trap from SpringStar attracts and captures adult birdseed moths
Indian meal moth
Mediterranean flour moth
These insects occur almost everywhere, and are attracted by birdseed. The moths lay eggs in cracks and crevasses near food, such as in shelving, cupboards, and pantries. Adult moths emerge and fly about seeking makes.
The Birdseed Moth Trap uses the same chemical messenger (Pheromone) that female moths use to attract male moths for mating. Male moths are drawn by the scent and are caught in the trap.
Removing male moths prevents mating and egg laying. Long term use of the Birdseed Moth Trap will reduce troubling infestations without the use of toxic chemicals. Safe, effective and non-toxic.
Full Spectrum 48 Inch Tall Floor Lamp for Birds
Thor has a full spectrum lamp similar to this. At the time pet shops were selling them for $150+ so I got smart and bought Thor's at an office supply store for $89. This one is even cheaper. Unless your bird spends time in an outdoor aviary he is not getting enough sunlight. A full spectrum lamp will help keep your bird healthy. When I turn Thor's lamp on he goes over and sits near it.
Easy way to provide healthy, full spectrum lighting.
27w, 6500 kelvin full spectrum bulb included.
Easy to assemble.
48 Inches Tall. Nice wood-like burl or brushed nickel finish.
JW Pet Insight Bird Claw Nail Scissors
I use these to clip Thor's nails. Make sure you have some "styptic powder" at the ready just in case you cut too far and the nail starts bleeding. A bird can die from a bleeding nail! Make very, very small cuts. Just 1-2mm.
JW Bird Insight Bird Claw Clippers. For Regular Trimming of your Bird's Claws.
Directions for use: Try locating the nail bed or "quick", inside your bird's claw. It contains blood vessels and nerves. The quick is easily visible in light colored nails but often difficult to see in dark nails. Be very careful and cut the nail well short of the quick. If you accidentally do cut the quick, apply styptic powder/gel or liquid to help stop the bleeding.
Start with a short cut to see, then trim further if needed.
This should be in every bird owners medicine chest! HAVE ON HAND BEFORE CLIPPING NAILS!
.5 Ounce Jar of Styptic Powder with Benzocaine (numbs pain). Aids to stop bleeding fast caused by clipping nails, wing clipping, broken blood feathers and minor superficial cuts.
Apply with moistened cotton applicator (Q-tip) to the cut, nail or other superficial bleeding area using moderate pressure for 5 to 10 seconds. Do not use on deep wounds, body cavities. External use only.
Bird Shower Perch - Pollys Pet Products - Large
Thor takes a shower with me every day. I firmly believe that the steam and mist are good for him. Usually he just sits on the shower door in the mist, but about once a week or so I take him in the shower and really wet him down. I don't use one of these perches but it can be a good way to bring your bird into your shower. They are also good to just stick on a window so you bird can look outside for a while. Looking out a window can be a birds favorite TV show.

LIXIT 8 oz Fine Mist Spray Bottle
Birds need to be misted every day. I take Thor in the shower most everyday. If for some reason I can't I make sure he gets a good mist. You can get these bottles at the Dollar Store but Thor asks that you get yours here.

Poop Off Bird Cage Cleaner
First off let me tell you that my favorite cage cleaner is my 5hp 2800psi pressure washer. It makes Thor's cage look like new. But there are times that I want to do a little cleaning without dragging the cage out to the driveway and setting up the pressure washer. For those times you can't beat Poop Off. This stuff really works and is safe for use around birds. I prefer the medium sized bottle with the sprayer over the small bottle with the brush.
Use Confidently On: Bird Cages - Parrot Play Stands - Bird Trees - Bird Toys - Carpet - Walls - Floors - Car Upholstery - Clothing - Furniture - Perches

The sprayer head comes with the 32 ounce bottle. The spray bottle is very effective on cage bars and walls.
Use the gallon size to economically refill the 16 ounce and 32 ounce bottles.

I assembled Thor's first aid kit piece-by-piece. This one is a little expensive, and I wonder about some of the items like the latex gloves, but you get it all in one box. The styptic powder is the most important item you need to have even if you don't trim your birds nails yourself.
