Cape Parrot Image Merlin

Companion of: Karen Vandenberg

From (City, State, Country): Coral Springs, FL

Age: 4

Birds Homepage: http://www.capeparrot.org

Number of Capes You Have: 1

Pet or Breeder: Pet

Why did you chose a Cape Parrot?: It was originally by default as we could not find an appropriate buyer for him. In the meantime I have come to really enjoy him.

Sex: Male

Sub-species: Suahelicus

Amount of coloring & where: Mostly green with orange and white highlights. Has grey tinted feathers above right leg due to prior injury which required use of Silvadene cream.( I’m convinced this colored his new feather growth.)

Where Purchased: Florida

When Purchased: 2 years ago

Age When Brought Home: 3 years old

Hand Fed: yes

Shy or aggressive around strangers: Friendly around strangers but shy until he gets to know someone. Can be territorial if on top of his cage and if there is a playbox provided.

Talking ability: Good. Says a few words but we are working with him to say more. He mimics all of the birds I had in the pet store, including caiques and a Golden Conure.

How would you rate noise: Low to moderate.

How would you rate activity level: Very active. He plays with all of his many toys and is an avid chewer.

Likes to bathe: Yes, every few days. Prefers bathing in water dish to large bowls or misting.

How cuddly or affectionate: Very. He loves to have his head “scritched” and will regurgitate for me and my younger son.

Territorial: Yes, while on top of his cage he can be territorial. We identified it as relating to nesting as he had a large play box placed on top of his cage. When that was removed, he was less territorial.

Size and type of cage: AE 32×23 playtop

Favorite toys and perches: Anything wood. Loves foot toys and thin slices of colored pine.

What is the regular diet: Goldenfeast Madagascar Delite, Pretty Bird Jungle Munchies, LaFeber Nutriberries, almonds, walnuts, pistacios and pine nuts. He likes fresh apple but is not enthused about other fruits and vegetables.

Favorite Food: Almonds

Avian Vet or other Vet: Backos Bird Clinic, 447 S Federal Highway, Deerfield Beach, FL 954-427-0777

Wings Clipped: Yes Both

Any Health Problems or Accidents: No health problems now but had been bitten by a tame skunk and had a lengthy recovery following stitches to repair the laceration and a subsequent infection.

Comments: These are great birds to have as companion birds.
