Hello Murry,

I am not familiar with the types of food you have available in South Africa. Here is the states mixes with sunflower seeds are not considered good diet for Poicephalus parrots. We have pellet parrot food. The favorite is called Harrisons and another good one is Roudybush. That is not to say that nuts are bad. They should be included in the diet as a treat. I feed Thor Pecans, Hazelnuts, Almonds, etc. He loves them but would eat nothing else if he had a bowl full of them. I'd seperate the nuts from the pellets and leave him with pellets all the time and nuts as a treat. Fruit is great but goes bad fast so you should just give him a little that he can finish right away.

As for sleep parrots, like all children, need a good night sleep. Thor sleeps 9-10 hours a night. He pretty much keeps the same hours I do, which means he is up late and sleeps in late. At night I cover his cage. If he is tired before I go to bed he gets into his cage himself and I just cover him them. In the morning I leave the cage covered until he asks to come out. He peeps or says "good morning". Thor usually goes to bed at 11:00PM and gets up around 9:00AM. He seems quite happy with this cycle as it is what the rest of his flock does.

Craig
