Thanks Craig. Yes, that is how it looks -- small flakes at the nares and bigger chunks near the tip. With my conure, there are generally only flat, broad flakes nearer the tip, which dust up easily. Betty also has some ridging of her beak lengthwise.

: Don't worry. Peeling beaks are normal. Beaks grow like fingernails and the outerlayers peal off to be replaced by new layers underneath.
: Near the tip, the beak is quite hard and sometimes breaks off in little hard chucks while up near the nose it is fairly soft and comes off in little soft flakes.
: Thor loves to have his beak scratched. I peel off all the loose bits for him. Beware that it the beak can be quite sensitive up near the nose, go lightly there.
